No time to read? Here are the key points of this post:
– We can find some BIG differences in football before and after COVID break
– There are fewer goals being scored
– There is a HUGE increase in away teams wins

The football world came to a complete stop (not counting Belarus) in March with the coronavirus outbreak. Most leagues had an over 2 months break and big questions on how the matches would be played after the break started to surface.

We analyzed data for the first 133 matches in the Bundesliga (73 matches), La Liga (35 matches), Serie A (11 matches) and Premier League (14 matches) played AFTER the coronavirus break and how they compared with the results BEFORE the break. Here is what we find out:

FEWER GOALS

All leagues had fewer goals per game after the COVID break. It is still too early to any conclusions on the Premier League and Serie A but we have a clear tendency so far.

Home Teams are not winning as much

This is the strongest impact we’ve had so far. Before the break, the home team would win 44% of matches across these leagues. After the break, the home teams won only 32% of matches.
We can conclude that playing without fans is having a HUGE impact on game results.

Those are our results by now. Let us know if you liked this analysis or what other articles like this one you would like to see.
